Electrodiagnostic Testing EMG/NCV
Our office performs EMG/NCV studies on those patients whose nerve symptoms are not getting
better as expected with supervised physical therapy. The EMG portion of this test measures electrical impulses produced by muscle fibers during rest as well as during contraction.
Surface Electromyography: Surface electrodes are applied to the skin & surface above the targeted
muscles in this technique.
A common method for assessing muscle activity during motions and activities is surface electromyography (EMG). It offers details on the general coordination and function of the muscles.
Needle EMG: In this method, a tiny needle electrode is inserted straight into the muscle. Needle EMG can assist in the diagnosis of disorders affecting the function of the muscles and nerves to provide more precise information about the activity of specific muscle fibers.
This specialized test (EMG/NCV studies) will confirm or rule our nerve entrapment syndromes
(pinched nerves). For the vast majority of patients treated in our office with physical therapy, this
test is typically not needed due to the fact that the majority of nerve related conditions tend to get better with supervised physical therapy. However, it is helpful for those individuals that do not improve with physical therapy.
